How does a timing light work?

It picks up an electromagnetic field from the spark plug wire and excites (lights up) the bulb in the end of the timing light every time that spark plug is firing. You connect it to #1 cylinder and point it at the timing mark on the engine and determine the degrees of advance it is firing at.
