3.8L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Properly drain the engine coolant from the radiator into a suitable container.

  3. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.

  4. Remove the serpentine belt.

  5. If more access is needed, remove the inner fender electrical cover.

  6. For 1992-96 vehicles, remove the alternator and position it aside.

  7. Remove the serpentine belt tensioner pulley and/or the water pump pulley.

  8. Unfasten the water pump attaching bolts, then remove the water pump and gasket. Discard the gasket.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the water pump mounting surfaces.

  2. Position a new gasket, then install the water pump.

  3. Install the attaching bolts, then tighten the long bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) and the short bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  4. Install the pulley(s) and the serpentine belt. Tighten the pulley bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).

  5. If removed, install the alternator.

  6. Attach the inner fender electrical cover, if removed.

  7. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.

  8. Refill the cooling system with the specified amount of engine coolant.

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

  10. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
