Customer Question
I have an 84 vette...
I have an 84 vette cross fire ram-x manifold with 2 worked trottle bodies, 710CFM. I installed a 350 10:1, 1.6 rockers, competiton mid range cam, dart 202 heads. Car surges at cruising speed but runs quick under full trottle. I have tried everything, new distributor, plugs, wires fuel filter, new pump etc. Car also runs hot.

Hi, I will do my best to assist you. When you are finished please click on accept. I don't get paid unless you do. I don't know if you are a pro or a novice so we may have to fine tune the answer.

That is because the computer is setup to operate the stock engine, and it is a simple speed density system that doesn't compensate for engine modifications. I am actually surprised it even runs good enough to drive. The surging is because it is running lean, not enough fuel. Depending on how lean you are you can burn valves and melt pistons if you continue to drive it this way.

I normally shudder when I see someone tear off a good injection setup off of an engine and replace it with a carburetor, but your application is one that would benefit from that type of transplant. A single plane intake and say a Holley 3310, and an HEI distributor for the ignition. The engine would strong and correctly. Now all that being said there is a place that is doing some good things with these systems, be prepared to spend some money. Also you will make much more power with the intake and carb I mentioned. Good luck with it when you get it setup correctly it will run great.

I hope this helps, 100% satisfaction is my goal. If the answer is not clear, please reply and I will assist you more. When you're satisfied, click on accept. I don't get paid unless you do. A bonus and positive feedback are always appreciated, good luck and Thanks.

I was looking for a solution not an alternative. I have seen 84 vette that went to carburetor and required many modifications, such as accelerator linkage, TVA cable, fuel regulator, distibutor, wiring modifications etc. There was no improvement in performance. I was looking for a lean fuel solution such as an AFC unit or computer reprograming. Your answer did not help me any. Thanks.
