Oil pressure fluctuates, runs fine most of the time..knocking..smoke

Customer Question

Oil pressure fluctuates, runs fine most of the time. When it shows low it sounds like the lifters are knocking. Does not smoke or leak oil. I had the oil pressure tested it showed low at that time. Changed oil did help. But the guage still goes down but not as as low.

Sounds like an oil pump concern. You'll need to remove the engine oil pan and inspect some bearings. If the bearings do not have too much clearance. you might get away with installing a new oil pump.

If the oil pump bad does it not just go out all the way?

It could be worn enough to lose volume and pressure. With 180k miles I strongly suggest to inspect the crankshaft bearing clearance.
