2002 mazda tribute es: check engine light..egr valve..drove..20 miles…

P0401 is the DPFE sensor. There is a TSB on this and it is a very common problem. It has to do with EGR but is not the valve itself but the EGR pressure sensor. Also a very common problem on Fords which use the same system. Here is the TSB that give the part numbers needed for replacement.

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) "ON"
with or without the following symptoms: Rough running, lack of
power, surge or poor fuel economy, along with Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTC's) P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401. This may be caused by
an intermittently functioning Tube-Mounted Delta Pressure Feedback
EGR (DPFE) Sensor.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired
using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.Retrieve DTC(s).

lIf P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401 are present, turn ignition
OFF and replace the DPFE sensor. Then proceed to Step 2.
lIf no DTC is retrieved, proceed with appropriate
electrical/driveability diagnostics according to Workshop
Manual (section 01-01 TROUBLESHOOTING).
2.Clear continuous DTC(s).
3.Verify repair by performing Key On Engine Off (KOEO) and Key
On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

to 2001-02 Tribute V6, B4000 and Tribute I4.
