My engine temp gauge goes up to nearly "H" then back down, then up again, etc. as I am driving. What could be the cause ?

No...no check engine light.....also the heater is working fine

Your problem is one of 4 things, and they are as follows.

1. Bad coolant temp sensor

2. Bad connection on coolant temp sensor or ecm.

3. Faulty ECM

4. Faulty temp gauge in dash

I am including the location of coolant temp sensor. If coolant temp sensor connections checks out okay then vehicle will need to be put on a scanner at a shop to further diagnose ECM and gauge.

Based on how many liter your engine is one of these diagrams will show you where coolant temp sensor is located. Look on tag under hood for your exact engine size.
