the car had been sitting idle for about 3 months -could it be something more than the battery? my dilema is whether to change the battery my self or have it towed to the dealer

Hi,

What is the exact problem- when you turn the key, nothing or just clicking noise? Do any of the accessories such as lights work?

Customer: replied 9 years ago.
nothing happens - we boosted it and it stayed running for about 3 or 4 minutes - i backed it out of the driveway and it went dead - boosted it again got it back into the driveway - went dead

Hi,

Sounds like a dead battery. If the battery has a bad cell, it wont hold a charge from the alternator, even for more than a few minutes.

A couple a choices before having it towed in.

  • if you have access to a voltmeter, check voltage of battery it should be at or near 12v
  • take battery out and take in to a parts shop to be tested

This will save you towing charges, as well as labor charges.
