Customer: Last night, I was at a stop sign and when I went to accelerate, the tack jumped but the car didn't move. I put it down into 1st gear (automatic transmission) and it finally went. This morning, it did the same thing and my service engine soon light came on. After driving it around today, 1st gear is very sluggish in low gear and my car does not shift past gear 3. It sounds to me like the transmission is going out, but do you think that this could be another problem?

HiCustomer It is very possible that you have a major internal failure in the transmission, but remember that these new transmissions are pretty much all controlled by electronics and the computer monitors this system, just as it does the sensor and things for the motor. The fact that the check engine light has come on, is a pretty good indication that there is a failure with a component either in the motor or in the transmission. I really think the first thing you should do is to have the system scanned and see what code shows up. You may get lucky and only have an electrical sensor or solenoid problem with the transmission that may be a lot less expensive to repair than doing a major overhaul on it. If you can get the system scanned, some of the larger parts stores like Auto Zone will do this as a free service, post the codes here and we can help you track down the problem. Thanks

PO756 and PO758

I figured out it's a shift solenoid. Is this something that I can fix myself. My step dad has a car lift but I was wondering how difficult this was to fix.

The P0756 is the 2-3 solenoid. The P0758, could be a wiring problem at the wiring harness pass through or it could be cause by the failure of the solenoid, but check the wiring close. You will need a class 2 scan tool to reset the memory values when you are done, but you should be able to do the job yourself. GM instructions below. Thanks

2-3 Shift Solenoid Valve Replacement

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the case side cover.
  2. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness.
    Object Number: 49385 Size: SH

  3. Remove the 2-3 shift solenoid (315B).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 49385 Size: SH

  1. Install the 2-3 shift solenoid (315B).
  2. Connect the transaxle wiring harness.
  3. Install the case side cover.

Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.
Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, The ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  4. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Adapt Function .

The information you gave me was awesome. I really appreciate it. I got the solenoid and am ready to put it in. The problem is, I can't fine the case side cover. Do I have to drop the pan to get to it, or is it somewhere else on the transmission?

Looking for anything I can get to get this fixed.

Hi again, The side cover is on the side of the trans, not the bottom oil pan. It is on the driver side and the drivers axle actually goes into it. It is a little more involved to remove than the oil pan. You can rent an engine support to do the job from a parts store. Info below on removal. It is a pretty big job and may require some special tools, you may even want to call around and see what a professional trans man would charge to do the job.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
