There have been many messages released as to why they break. Most believe it is the casting. I personally believe it is a weak design in the shaft. It can also be blamed on stress build up over time especially once the crank starts to get sloppy and move around a little over specs thus increasing the stress while under torque.

I would like to know the other reasons of what could cause the crankshaft to break besides a weak crank design.

Other causes are unbalanced cylinder contribution.

If the vehicle is a manual then incorrect transmission operation can cause a sudden jolt to the crank.

The overall answer is a weak spot. It should hold up to all conditions and circumstances. So a weak spot is the first place for a problem to occur.
