Customer: the ecm burned out in my explorer, found one in a wrecked 94 explorer that was 4.0 v6 auto 4wd just like mine. truck cranks and drives but acts like it has bad gas or clogged converter when trying to accelerate as well as backfires. found matching numbers on ecm. is it the cause of the way it's running or something else like fuel filter,sensors, etc...replaced converter, fuel pump and relay so far.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT


That is a warning light that comes on if the computerized engine


control system detects an engine performance or emissions problem. Also


called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL).


Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retreive the trouble


codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes


will get you pointed in the right direction.




To extract DTCs from the computer for diagnostic purposes, the Self Test connector is used.



  1. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. If engine will not start or stalls after starting, proceed with next step.

  2. Turn the key "OFF", then wait ten seconds.

  3. Activate the self test by grounding the Self-Test Input (STI) connector.

  4. Turn the ignition key "ON".

  5. Record all codes received.

  6. Turn ignition "OFF".

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: not a mechanic by no means..lol where will these codes be received? Or would i be better off letting a mechanic troubleshoot this to save my sanity and pocketbook?
When you jump out the connecters the way it tells you, then the check engine light will flash code numbers with pauses between digits. It going to get pretty technical so letting a shop that has a scan tool do it may save you a lot of grief. The codes would still need to be troubleshooted and interpreted anyway.
