We bought the Garmin Montana 650t together with the Garmin

Customer Question

We bought the Garmin Montana 650t together with the Garmin Auto suction cup mount with speaker. The device was used in Africa in hot sunny and dusty conditions. Towards the end of the trip the device back light stopped working. In sunny conditions it became impossible to read the map displayed on the device. If one removed the cable from the cigarette lighter, the back light reappeared but only for a limited time (approx.10minutes) and then the device switched off.
It there a problem with the Montana 650t or is it a problem with the mount ? And can it be repaired ?

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. The backlight switches Off if the device is on (internal, not automotive) battery power. If the whole device swiched Off not just the backlight, when it was running on its own internal battery, that hints that either it timed-out as a whole, or that the internal battery itself may need replacing, soon if not immediately.

It is possible that the problem is not with the Garmin device itself, but rather the cigarette lighter power adapter - or its connections.Lots of heat and dust? the backlight worked, if briefly, after that. So the backlight itself isn't broken. But dust onto the connections of the lighter adapter - and, inside the cigarette lighter where it's not easy to see - could reduce the power provided by the lighter adapter enough that the device saw itself as on internal battery power most of the time... the few times it didn't, the backlight had already timed out, and so it barely recharged a little but with the backlight still Off ... and then when unplugged altogether from the lighter adapter, it soon ran out of battery altogether (in which case, the battery isn't necessarily bad.) So that's another explanation - the lighter socket, and/or the lighter adapter and its connectors to the Garmin device (and the connector in the Garmin device) all need to be cleaned out.Use an old toothbrush or similar small brush, but one that is both clean *and* dry, to scrub off and scrub out all parts of the lighter adapter, and the jack for it on the Garmin device, and inside the lighter itself if possible... and then wipe off all metal parts that you just brushed, until the metal is bright and shiny.
