Hi! It's my first time filing taxes in Canada. I live part-time in the U.S. and file taxes there too. I am a Canadian citizen but lived in the U.S. until March 2022. My employer did not withhold CPP or EI from my paychecks last year. I only have a T4 to file. When I entered my income information into ufile.ca it told me I owe more than $11,000 in taxes. Is this possible?? It's a very large percentage of my total income and I am not able to pay that as a lump sum, I have no savings.

If you made income in Canada or owe taxes to the Canadian government, you must submit a tax return in Canada as a citizen. You could also need to submit a tax return in the U.S. based on your income received there since you spent a portion of the year there.Your T4 reveals your income as well as any taxes that were deducted throughout the year. If your employer didn't deduct CPP or EI from your paychecks, it's possible that you weren't treated as an employee or that you were treated as a self-employed person.

You would be liable for paying both the employee and employer components of CPP and EI if you worked for yourself. If you worked as an employee, however, your employer would be in charge of deducting CPP and EI from your paychecks.Nonetheless, you must declare your T4 income on your Canadian tax return. Depending on your employment situation, you might also be required to pay any CPP and EI contributions that weren't deducted from your pay.
