Permanent residency. I ama permanent resident. I have a
Hi there, I have a question regarding permanent residency and COVID-19. I am a permanent resident in Canada and came back to Australia in November 2019 as I had lived in Canada for 10 years over an 11 year period. I returned home as I hadn't been close to family in a long time and I wanted to spend time with them as my grandparents who I grew up with both turned 90 so I moved close to them so i could see them every few weeks whilst working in my profession. My original plan was to stay in Australia for 2 1/2 years and return to Canada in March this year, as you know Covid happened last year and brought the world to a standstill and as Australia has coped fairly well it made sense to stay here in the interim. My monumental mistake was I misread the fine print that I have to be in Canada for 730 days in a five year period and thought it was only a year. My current covid relevant plan was to return in March next year once a greater sense of normalcy returns but this would put me 120days(roughly) short of the residency obligations when my PR comes round for "renewal" in Nov 2023. I have a fairly good business that I am executing at the moment and would stand to benefit from this greatly by staying in Australia till March next year. Are there any exemptions of the residency obligations due to covid or more plainly, what are my options?… read more

I have been married or 24 years. My husband has been chronically ill for the past 17 years and unable to work as a teacher. We left our life in Vancouver to move back to Ontario for support from my parents. His illness has created enormous stress in our family. He is basically non-functioning and I have done everything for the past 17 years - managing all details of our life, raising our daughters, helping him with his painting career getting work to his galleries, allowing time for him to paint when he was up by caring for our children. He sleeps most of the day and gets up around 4 or 5 pm. each day. The doctors have not been successful in helping him and about 12 years ago he basically stopped trying to help himself. We have two children, 14 and 19 years old. We have lived with my parents, in their home for the past 17 years without paying rent. They wanted to help us financially so that our children could have opportunities in their lives. My husband and I were able to buy a small cottage beside my parents, 13 years ago. The only reason we could purchase the cottage was because of my parents generosity allowing us to live in their home. If my marriage ends in a divorce because things are not going well - can my parent charge us rent for the past 17 years which my husband and I would have to repay. Perhaps allowing me to keep the family cottage. My husband is a painter and my parents allowed him to use a big portion of their basement to set up an art studio - he has over 200,000 worth of paintings and art supplies. I have not returned to my teaching career since I had children - I have been a caregiver to my husband and now help take care of my aging parents (85 & 86). … read more
