Hi there. I have schizoaffective disorder and I am treated at an outpatient clinic at London Health Sciences Centre. LHSC instituted anew violence screening policy in which all patients are screened for certain symptoms and if they get one check on the list they are deemed a risk of violence and are forced to wear a bright purple armband to draw attention to others that they are risks of violence. Most of the staff members at the hospital vehemently disagree with this policy. Among the many problems with the screening tool they use is that many of the things that are deemed risk of violence are the same symptoms of psychosis. I have never been violent in my life, neither when I was sane or having an episode. It’s embarrassing to wear the bracelet. What are your thoughts?

To clarify - are you referring to the LHSC in London, Ontario and does this new armband policy apply equally to all outpatients of the clinic ?

It only applies to the mental health clinic. The rest of the visitors to the hospital so do not have to undergo screening

I understand why you would not like to be overtly labelled with the armband if you do not have an history of violence.

Have you spoken to your outpatient psychiatrist about not wanting to have to wear the armband ? If your condition is stable and your are adhering to your treatment, your psychiatrist may reconsider having you wear the band.

It’s not up to my psychiatrist. He agrees that I shouldn’t have to wear it, as do most of the staff.

I see - Would your psychiatrist be willing to help you advocate with the hospital that you do not fit the criteria for someone who needs to wear the band ?

In that case, your psychiatrist is the one who can help you because it is probably based on his or her assessment on the screening form that you now have to wear the armband.

I would suggest that you ask her to complete the screening form again in a manner that will accurately reflect that you are not a risk to others.
