First, I wanted to tell you that my heart just goes out to you.

Second, my daughter did her paediatric residency training at the IWK and you are in superb hands (even though she is back in Toronto where we live.

The law is very unclear in this area in the sense that you need a great deal of guidance from the doctors as what your rights are depend on the child's condition, potential outcomes etc.

You will have more leeway in terms of not consenting to something that is not yet in place as opposed to getting life support terminated at this point for example.

At the end of the day, if they doctors just won't agree with you, then you would need a lawyer and an emergency court order which you could get even during the time of this pandemic.

For now your best first step is to speak to the staff doctor and not a resident and ask what they foresee as the various potential outcomes for your child. Then ask what instructions at this point they will agree to take from you in terms of changing current treatment plans.

That will give you a good idea of where they feel you stand and what next steps you may have to take.

After that you can ask to speak to the director of the hospital and see what they will do in terms of decision making.
