I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.
Did you acquire the properties during the marriage?
You don't share the assets but only the value of the assets.
So you add up all the value of the assets in your name taking half for the jointly held assets. From that total you subtract all your debt (taking half for jointly held debt) and then subtract the value of any assets owned at the time of your marriage and then subtract the value of any gifts or inheritances.
You do the same for your spouse.
Then the one with the higher number (called Net Family Property) pays the other spouse the amount of money that would make the two totals equal.
Does that make sense?
