You don't have to resign. But at this stage as you cannot work the employer is legally free to say that the contract has been frustrated. They can consider the contract to be at an end.

You cannot compel them to continue to keep you on as an employee when you know you cannot ever fulfill your end of the contract.

I don't know what help you want from your union but the law is clear and you cannot compel an employer to keep you employed when the contract has been frustrated by your inability to become employable again.
