I am sorry for your loss and to hear this of this difficult situation.

You can ask the executor to provide you with a written report of what has gone on in a general way or you can ask for details of all financial information. The executor should have provided this for you at least twice by now really as it is generally expected that you get annual reports at least.

Once he has the CRA tax clearance certificate he will send you a release to sign before he disburses the money. You don't have to sign until you are satisfied. If you are not then you can demand a formal passing of accounts. That will take more time and cost the estate legal fees but may be necessary if he doesn't co-operate.

You can send a harshly worded letter threatening court or you can have a lawyer send it.

And if necessary you can proceed to court and even consider asking the court to remove the executor who is not forthcoming and is taking much too long to wind up this estate.
