I am sorry to hear that you are in a difficult situation.

Is this a residential tenancy or a commercial tenancy?

Residential!
Lawyer: Debra, Lawyer replied 11 months ago

In Ontario the Residential Tenancies Act does require that you provide your landlord with 60 days clear notice if you are moving out and terminating your tenancy agreement.

So he is right.

The lease ends but your tenancy automatically turns into a month-to-month tenancy and so the 60 days does apply.

I am sorry that you did not know this and sorry this has happened to you.

Please feel free to post back with any follow-up questions you may have. If you don't have any then I hope I have earned a 5 star rating even though I had to provide you with an answer you were not hoping for but if you don't feel that I have please don't hesitate to reply back and let me know what more I can do to assist you. Finally, please know that even after you rate me I will be here for you and you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later on at no further charge of course.
