I am sorry to hear this.
Is your son receiving provincial assistance/benefits because he is disabled?
Who says you have to help finance his school?
And is his mother going to provide you with child support given the child will be living with you and attending school?
Is he going to be attending school full-time?
Essentially society wants the kids educated so our legal system support parents supporting kids, at least for one full degree, if they are attending school full time. This is how the courts have interpreted the Federal Child Support Guidelines.
And support here means the basic support and the school expenses.
So no you cannot charge him rent. He is entitled to support. Your support is providing room and board. So he mother has to compensate you just as she would if he were a minor. She must pay you support for your having him live with you.
And you and the mother, and your son have to contribute to his education.
Kids are supposed to get summer jobs and then about 1/3 of their summer earnings are to be contributed and they are to get all outside financial assistance possible. Then parents pay the rest based on their incomes.
