Does the agreement allow for cancellations before the begin the application process?
If you didn't cancel in time by the means they required and you agreed to then it may be that they will try and take the position that you did not cancel in time.
I suggest that you consider paying a lawyer to send them one letter stating that you cancel by way of email as they had been communicating by email. they never told you that you had to cancel by fax, you assumed that email was sufficient as they had adopted that method and they should have pointed out what is in the fine print of the letter.
The lawyer can say that the contract is at end and that you expect only to hear from them once, which is to be a written confirmation that the contract is at an end.
Hopefully as they are already in trouble so far as you've heard, they will just disappear.
