I. We are the victims of a renoviction and wish to stay inWe are the victims of a renoviction and wish to stay in the community when we move. We realized that the next door neighbor s moved out hastily and that their unit would be vacant so we spoke to the owner and we made a verbal agreement that my husband, dog and myself would rent the place ASAP for $1300 (small two bedroom + heat and hydro). She then proceeded to have cheap commercial grade indoor/ outdoor carpeting installed over paint stained wooden floors, replaced a couple doors and windows( not at our behest) and fixed an electrical issue resulting in the appearance of a separate circuit breaker as there are 2 other units in this triplex. When I enquired about moving day she informed me that the rent rose to 1260 because of her capital costs. July 2 was supposed to be moving day but she was not keeping us informed about the progress made. Finally we saw the final product of her investment and she blithely told us the rent was now 1400 plus she expects my husband to do yard work and Garbage removal for the riff Raff who still live upstairs. We will be on the main floor and can no longer afford the rent. We have not signed any paperwork yet but need to vacate our current apartment by July 7 in order to receive the compensatory payout from our current landlady. What can we do? Is the new landlady acting legally? … read more
