VerifiedYou can register it lien on title so long as you have not gone beyond 45 days after substantially completing your work.
Then you must sue within another 180 days to perfect the lien.
You don't necessarily need to retain a lawyer as you can self represent. And if you succeed in court and it seems clear to me that you would, he would be required to pay a good portion of your legal fees as well as interest on what he owes you.
As a first step though the best approach is to pay a lawyer a small fee to send him a letter threatening a lawsuit. That will make him realize that he is going to be required to pay you and if he makes you take him to court he is going to have to pay quite a bit more than what he owes.
