Thanks for your help! Sorry it will look long here but I'll be to the point! I am a tenant of a lower-unit 700 sq.ft. apartment, with a separate upper-unit 1700 sq.ft apartment above us, all managed by a real-estate company who holds the utilities accounts with hydro and gas companies. We have lived here for 17 months, and our lease signed in the beginning says our lower unit's utilities are included up to $60/mo. We have never once received a notification nor invoice from landlord/property management company or the utilities company reporting our energy usage, and have only expected to hear on a monthly basis *if we go over the $60/mo. limit, and that over-limit amount we would expect to pay the following month. Well! We received an Excel sheet from the real-estate company claiming 17-months back-dated utilities bills all at once, and they haven't shown us any utilities invoices to back those numbers, and are asking for us to pay the cumulative amount all at once. Can they do that this way? Also, we were never told the 2 units, Upper and Lower, would be splitting the utility bills based on square footage. We are 2 people and there are 5 upstairs in the bigger unit, but they mostly work from home and the 2 of us have held out-of-home jobs the entire 17 months, plus are away most weekends. Is it OK for them to Just split the bills they receive by square footage? How can that be if our lifestyle is different than the unit above us? … read more
