My case
I will start from the beginning when i came to Montreal , i was pregnant 13 weeks with
my twins and i was considered as a high risk pregnancy case so i had to take an
immediate appointment with a doctor at the Royal Victoria Hospital where it was the
closest to my house as will as they have the specialist that can deal with my case ,
everything was okay i was going to me appointments and my ultrasounds taking into
consideration an extra risk where they found at 20 weeks that i have a critical case
(short cervix which can led to a preterm labor ) during these visits no one until after my
delivery told me that the insurance company(blue cross) which deals with McGill
University didn't pay any thing for my visits and ultrasound to sunrise me with a big bill
of total 21 000 CAD for the doctor visits ,ultrasounds ,delivery and hospitalization
explaining that i had a preterm labor and if i gave birth around Mar15 ,2013 instead of
my due date Mar 3 ,2013 it will be covered , I accepted what they said and paid all my
savings for the doctors and made an agreement with the hospital to pay the rest
(7000CAD ) in a monthly payments (100 CAD which I'm still paying until now ) .
after few months , Royal Victoria hospital sent my a new imaginary bill with my
daughter's name (320 000 CAD) saying that the insurance again didn't pay the bill and
only paid part of it , i asked for a period of time to think and see what i can do as i
didn't receive any details from her file and after two month now they sent me a new
deal where they reduce the bill to 104 000 CAD which honestly still imaginary for a
student with our income and asked me to do a monthly plan to pay that .
My concerns is what is my position on this case as i think they made me sign some
papers after few days of my delivery which they didn't give me a copy of it or didn't
send it to me until now . And is it possible to do something for it as I'm only a student
who hardly got a third party to pay my tuition or to reduce it and make an easy
possible monthly payment with the other 100 $ I'm paying right now .
Sorry for being long but i tried to put all the details in to make it clear to you , and
please you can contact me for the bills details and emails from the hospital officer as
well.

Are you saying your insurers told you that you were not covered for the birth unless it happened after March 15 but it happened before that?

If that's the case then you knew you did not have insurance right?

hello ,

first of all the bill is with my daughter's name and I want to know what is my position in this case ?

they said I have to be 30 week pregnant while I'm in the contract with the insurance and that's only if i was going to give birth in March 15 instead of March 3 as the insurance paid part of the original bill 450 000 CAD

no i was visiting the doctor and i went to the hospital for delivery because i thought everything is going well as no one in the hospital told me about my bills not being paid until Feb 2013 while i was visiting the doctor from August 2012 .

The hospital would not have any idea whether your private insurance company was going to pay the full bill or any of the bill. That is a private matter between you and the insurers.

You don't have publicly funded health care in Canada. So you are personally liable to pay for all medical expenses. Someone has to pay and the government in Quebec will not as you are not a resident with coverage. That coverage is paid for by the taxpayers. So it is not available to you.

It was your responsibility to find out what was covered and what was not covered by your private health insurance. University provided health insurance is rarely the best insurance so your responsibility was to purchase additional insurance or go home to have the babies.

You are liable for all the expenses the insurance won't cover because you used the medical services and they are not free. If there is no one else to pay for you then you have to pay.

But you should review your health insurance policy to be sure you got the coverage you were entitled to.

And you should check back home to see if you have any coverage there that would cover you in Canada.

I am sorry this is not the answer you were hoping for but it is an accurate and honest answer. There just is no free medical services so you have to pay for them just like you would anywhere else. The hospital is not going to let this go as the amount owing is very high of course and they need the money as the health care system never has enough funds as it is.
