i have a question regarding pets and stratas in BC
can the strata... which allows cats and dogs... require that CATS be kept indoors
or leashed (which is kinda unusual) when outside?
can they force you to get rid of the pet?

When you bought your unit was this by-law about keeping cats in doors or leashed in existence?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

the by law said.. pets were permitted

that pets are to be leashed

it does not specify cats to be indoors or

cats (or dogs) to be leashed

owner is responisible for thier pet when outside the strata lot

pets must be leashed at all times

unattended pets are not permitted in the common buildings or within the boundries of common property

The by-law is lawful so long as it was voted on properly.

If you knew about it before you bought your unit then there is no basis for believing you are not bound by it unfortunately.

They can fine you each time you breach the by-law unfortunately.

You can try and get the by-law amended to preclude this applying to cats if you like.

Let me know if you need any further clarification.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

so even tho it does not specify cats being leashed

or that cats are to be kept as indoor pets

they (the strata) can INTERPRET that as meaning cats

are to be leashed?

I think they are saying that this simply applies to all pets.

I have three cats so I completely understand why this doesn't make sense and that's why I am suggesting you may be able to get them to change the by-law.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

i understand

thank you for your reply

i KNOW this strata will not CHANGE their by law to allow such

however.. i think i will argue with them that it is not SPECIFIC

enough .. and to amend it better to suit their needs

I hope that will be long enough to prevent them from issuing me fines

and teach my poor cat to be an indoor cat

this will conclude my questions will you.. but I will need u to reply once more such that I can give u a favourable review and end the session

have a good nite

I think that the by-law was aimed at dogs.

And that's what you can argue.

It is not logical to think it applies to cats as cats are not put on leashes very often and when we see that we think it's strange.

So I think that's your best argument. How could it apply to cats?
