Here's his last full email to me yesterday. I'm not sure how to respond now. What would you do in my position feeling that you were lead to believe that the laptop was your and days after the severance was paid they start going after me for it?

"I didn't hear back from you before the end of the day Friday. As far as I am aware you are still in possession of a MacBook Air and a Thunderbolt display that belongs to (the company).

I'm hoping we can get this issue resolved without taking further steps. I would like to remind you that under your signed employment contract you are required to surrender all property belonging to the company that was provided for your use at home in good working order immediately upon termination of your employment. Further, your signed termination includes a clause reminding you that any equipment that may be in your position must be returned in order for our very generous severance offer to be valid. Failure to return the equipment that's missing in good working order will contravene the terms you agreed to, putting the severance that was offered at risk.

Can you please get back to me within 48 hours either via email or phone at the number below and let me know your plan for returning the missing hardware to us?

It does say that I am to return all company property but as I mentioned i was lead to believe that the items were mine to keep. I have personal data on there and since my termination, I've cleared any company data on the laptop and the monitor has resided in my home since it was given to me.

It does. My only concern is that they will try to take back the severance or sue me for more than the amount of the items. Also, how do I reply to them "no, the stuff is mine . Sue me!"? I'm also concerned that they will not give me my ROE so I can apply for ei. It's been 3 weeks already and I haven't received it yet. Can they do any more than just sue me?
