I have a bank account and savings and I live in a condo (jointly owned) here in Ontario, he has a financial portfolio held by an American Bank - we have household goods in a rented house in Tokyo. We lived as

expats in Tokyo for 4 years until I moved back here in 2010.

They have a draft of our net family property equalization payment, and we also have a pension valuation that was completed by a pension valuator. However, my lawyer has suggested that if it is at all possible, I consider taking the pension "at source' ...as it seems like it might make more financial sense for me in the long term. I agree with that 100%.. but as it seems rather complicated, I wanted to know what the possibilities, obstacles and expenses of that are in reality.

I appreciate your reply, but a couple of things please.... 1st, the equalization payment itself isn't taxable, but all the assets that go into it have already had tax provisions deducted, including the pension.. So effectively, i'm paying taxes on the pension whether it's taken at source or in a lump sum. Secondly, just because we're using collaborative lawyers doesn't change what is required in order to execute the splitting of pensions... so my question still remains.. can we execute a Quadro in Canada. Is it possible to find someone who might know the answer to this?

I don't quite understand then, why in my NFP, the accountant has taken so many provisions for taxes. Every financial asset (not tangible assets such as the condo), that has a future tax liability has been given a corresponding tax provision, so that the tax liability is also shared equally between my husband and I, Including things like RRSP's and the pension..could you please clarify this. Perhaps it's just the non-taxable assets that aren't given tax provisions..
