The NICU unit and the Paediatric unit have a had a feud for years. This nurse wanting to sue me for slander, Mary, was angry the morning of the incident because the night shift had filed an unsafe workload report to our bosses because NICU was staffed with a paediatric staff (not her) and a resuscitation could have ended badly because that staff wasn't trained to work in the unit. Mary said it is degrading to Paeditric nurses that an unsafe workload report was filed and said she can look after premature and ventilated babies no problem. This is the comment she'd made and no one was there to hear it, though our mutual boss has pulled her aside to caution her against making statements like this in the past. Now I freely admit that I did tell a few other NICU nurses that she'd made this comment--it was true, and it was a shocking statement to hear from a nurse with zero training with premature and ventilated babies. It spread around work, and here we are three months later and she's angry she's being teased about it by other (not me) NICU staff. Does this case have legs to stand on if I admit I did tell a few other staff members? What should I say with regards to that in my meeting tomorrow?

So the morning of the incident Mary was very angry about the report that was filed on night shift. She brought up her anger in front of myself and three other nurses working. She made a few comments throughout the morning such as referring to herself and another paediatric nurses working in NICU that day as 'riff raff', to which I repeatedly told her that no one views them that way and that the report was filed for our mutual protection in the future and it is never anything personal. She looked around the unit and said 'the babies that are here now, I can look after no problem' (there were no critical babies at the time). I agree she made this statement. Later, when the rest of the nurses were at lunch, she said she's still very angry about the report, and then we had the conversation I earlier told you about. Mary is now saying that the other Paediatric nurse remembers the conversation. I spoke with this nurse and she's describing the conversation in the morning when all of us nurses were present, not the one later when it was just Mary and I. So Mary now says she has a witness that she never said that, however her witness remembers (correctly) a separate conversation!
