I've worked for a construction company for 6 years now. WeI've worked for a construction company for 6 years now. We recently laid off many people and the rest of us were given a letter by hand stating that we would be getting paid 80% of our salary and going down to a 4 day work week. Since then, our company has been building pandemic relief units at hospitals to increase capacity for caring for patients and relieving the capaity burden on hospitals due to COVID-19. It has taken a massive amount of time and effort by all of us to make this happen and many of us have been working (mostly from home) every single day (weekends, holidays, etc) for 8-14hrs a day. I worked 40 straight days and there are others who have done the same. I can;t speak for the others, although I do know that some have been getting paid at least at 100% of their salaries, but I have been getting paid 80% the entire time. No extra pay for the weekends, holidays, evening, etc. I know that they plan to do more layoffs soon and I suspect I will be one of them. I am close with management and am on what we call the senior leadership team. I know the company's strategy has been to lay ppl off and hope they find other jobs so that they can avoid paying severance pay. I've been told by the CFO that we're also only accumulating vacation at 80% at this point as well. I was recently in a meeting at the office with the President, CFO, and VP of Ops where I was told the rest of of the staff who haven;t been laid off are called back into the office for this monday. When I told them that many ppl have been working long and hard hours at home and they lmight want to consider letting some of them remain working at home as they have been more productive, I was told that if they don't want to come back that we'll lay them off. I was told that people are taking advantage of companies while at home and that's what they are saying all over the news. I'm sure that me standing up to advocate for the people who have been working hard to get these projects built for COVID is going to lead to my being laid off. I know that they will try to avoid paying any severance. They may try to terminate me and classify me as a "construction worker" and claim that I am not entitled to any severance due to an exemption under the ESA. We've never had a formal HR person until 3-4 months ago (she was fired last month approx 4 months after joining us. It was always me before that and I have no formal training in HR. There was also an instance in late Janury at a conference in Whistler where I was verbally attacked by the VP of Ops and CFO (they had been drinking) whereby I was reminded that they had hired a few ppl over the last year or so to take work off of my plate and I was asked what I'm going to be able to do for the company now. I was told that the Executive VP ( a part owner and family friend) wouldn't be able to protect me and that I should be concerned because I have a young family to provide for. I replied that I have worked long hours, evenings, weekends, etc.. I was told I'm not even worth the salary I was was being paid. They apologized to me a day later. In conversations with the VP of Ops since then I was told that he and the CFO were asked by the President to figure out how to leverage my people skills and be most useful to the company. They clearly didn't go about it the right way. The company has never paid our ontariio hourly staff any OT, shift premiums, etc.. I have at times been asked not to post the mandatory ESA posters that show that the staff are entitled to OT. They have been paying OT in the Vancouver office which I help to manage as well. … read more
