No, the lender can not legally pursue your wife for payment.. The debt is owing by you, and she was just paying on your behalf. The lender can successfully sue you for payment only.
If you are sued, your income could be subject to a garnishee, or the lender could pursue assets from you.
If you cannot work out some type of payment plan, then your options may be to selling assets or trying to increase your income to afford the payments.
If those are not options, perhaps you need o speak with a bankruptcy trustee about a consumer proposal or bankruptcy. Either could decrease the amount if debt that you will have to pay, and these may be available options to you.
You can seek an order of spousal support from your wife through family court. The court does not look at all at why the relationship broke down or who may be at fault. Spousal support can be ordered if a spouse has been financially dependent on the other and now has a financial disadvantage as a result of the marriage breakdown, or is financially incapable of being self sufficient despite reasonable efforts.
