Hello I am a Canadian permanent resident and originally from Iran. My wife and 2 sons live in Canada and I am a university professor at Shiraz University, Iran and have collaborations with the University of Toronto and also the University of Waterloo. I have a question about the relationship between me and my bank (TD bank). I have opened several accounts (including chequing, saving CAD, saving USD, gold visa card and line of credit) since 2005 with TD bank. All these accounts are shared with my wife too. All my accounts were always in good standing. Last week I and my wife both received similar letters from TD obliging us to close all our accounts by 27 June 2012. They haven't mentioned any reason for this decision. This letter was a big shock to me and my family. As we investigated this matter trough family and friends that work in different banks including TD they mentioned that during the past 1 month many Iranians have received similar letters from TD obliging them to close their accounts without mentioning any reasons. Afterwards, I went to the TD branch located at Young and Finch in Toronto. I talked with the manager of the bank. At first his only response was that he doesn't know anything and this decision was made by higher managers of TD. Finally when I told him that my family was very disturbed with this letter and it's our right to know the reason he replied that don't worry! This is an internal decision and there is nothing wrong with you and your accounts. He also said that during the past month his branch has lost over 100 Iranians that all received such letters. He mentioned that due to this action his branch has lost nearly 1 billion dollars! As I have realized this could be a nasty discrimination against Iranians by TD. This is unbelievable but seems to be the case. I wonder what can I do personally? I believe TD has the right to close its clients accounts. But I want reasons. Second, If this discrimination is true what legal actions the Iranian-Canadian community can take against TD? Thanks very much for your time and consideration.
