In Sask. Unsure if X has applied I doubt it. The letter from CPP is a result I believe is from my 2009 tax return which is the first year of seperation and all the new tax information which is required. I have claimed spousal, shown child support and other paid expences as required in the return. Since 2009 I have also become disabiled and the LTD Insurance company has asked me to apply for CPP benelits. The insurance company will be reimbursed for CPP and also for CPP to pay diability benifits which in result allows the Insurance company to pay less. The CPP split forms arrived as I think as a result of the above.

A credit split in this case, given your income was higher than your ex - spouse's will give you less credit's and your ex-spouse more.

But your ex-spouse could make such a claim anyway.

So in my case I understand it would not be something I would apply for. If both of us do not apply do each of our own credits just continue to build individually or does the legal seperation process get involved somewhere automatically down the line.

The credit splitting is only for the credits earned when you were common law spouses.

Once you separated any credits earned after that are not shared.

There is nothing automatic.
