Unfortunately, in that case, under the particular class of visa you've entered into it cannot be extended. You can, however, apply for the program a total of two (2) times so, if this was your first time under this program you can reapply (resubmitting the entire application). Once you receive it, you will need to leave the country and re-enter in order to have the work permit issued at the point of entry.

If you've already been through this program twice, you'll need to return home and the employer will need to apply for a traditional work-visa for you.

With respect to the comments of the CBSA officer on entry, the information provided is erroneous. Depending on your country of origin, you may be able to re-enter as a visitor for up to 6 months (on CBSA approval) only to visit but not work but this only applies for a few countries under the Visa Waiver Program and, in most cases, you would need to leave and re-enter as a visitor.

You will need to meet with a local Immigration Lawyer to review your current status and discuss your options going forward.
