I had a debt from...

I had a debt from a credit card company that was "written Off" 6 years ago. There has been no 3rd party collections or judgement on this debt however about a year ago, the debt was sold to a collection company. That statutes of limitations has expired on the debt in Alberta. Is Equifax suppose to expunge this information from my credit bureau..6 years later automatically or do I have to contact them? I would assume that the debt is no longer recoverable from any standpoint. I have made no payments since 2002.

You need to contact Equifax. However, it is possible that Equifax and\or the creditor will take the position that while the limitation period has expired to sue, the unpaid debt still remains and ought to be included in your credit history.

The debt is not recoverable unless you make a new payment towards the debt.

I am of the understanding that the credit bureau has to expund any information on your file that is older than 6 years..even if it is negative. 3rd party collection are purged from the date of the last payment. Are you saying that they do not have to do this??

It varies with each province and territory. Some are 6-years. However, I do understand that generally speaking consumer reporting agencies like Equifax and Trans Union (and you should contact both) will expunge such information after 6-years.
