If you do not complete the 730 days you would lose your PR status and would not be able to sponsor them to begin with. So it is critical that you meet that residency requirement (or upon entry can prove that you will meet that before your PR card expires).

Your failure to meet the 730 day requirement would mean their applications would also fail.

Naturalization is ultimately a different matter altogether. Once you are in Canada you would then apply once you've met that residency requirement. However if you lose your PR status Naturalization would be out of the question.

My recommendation is to figure out how many days you have (full days, physically in Canada that you can document) to meet the 730 day requirement and add at least one month and make sure you are physically present for that time. Just by rough numbers that means you should be okay if you return in July. (July 1, 2010 to October 20, 2013 gives you just over 1200 days). I would not extend your stay abroad any longer however, but from the dates you've indicated it should be sufficient for both the Residency renewal and -- once the Naturalization residency requirement it met -- the Naturalization application as well.
