And, why does it matter in terms of the 17 versus the 29 years?
Are all the assets in his name alone? Did she contribute to the value of these assets?
Do they both work now? Is there a discrepancy in their incomes?

It matters because the man says co-habited for 17 years, wife says 29 years. All assets in the husbands name except house which has been settled 50%/50% RIF (Registered Income Fund) and Investment Account in his name amounting to 1.2 million. She worked for15 years with 56,000 salary and paid expenses enabling him to pay off mortgage and create savings. Both retired 1999. Husband made 64,000 approximately per year plus capital gains. Income split on income taxes since retirement. No children from common law relationship. Grown son and daughter of hers. Man's income now for last three years 103,000 and hers only CPP of 390.00 monthly. He is 73 she is 64.
