If the find he is here illegally then can deport him. If that's the case he may not be able to come back.

He cannot apply for a temporary work permit from Canada.

If you marry him you can sponsor him as your spouse. It is possible to sponsor a spouse even if the spouse is here illegally. This will not prevent them from deporting him but the application itself doesn't trigger the deportation.

You can sponsor him if you are on disability benefits.

Once you are married your spouse can sponsor you.

The way this works is that the sponsorship application and the permanent resident application go in together. Once you are approved as a sponsor his application will be processed.

He will need to undergo medical, background and criminal checks.

It will take about 9 months - 1 year if you are applying from outside of Canada and likely well over a year ,maybe closer to two, if you are applying from within Canada.
