VerifiedIf you incurred a debt in the US, then the medical services provider becomes a creditor. The challenge for them is that they do not have jurisdiction over you in Ontario. This does not mean they cannot sue you, however.
The debt was incurred in the USA and they can sue you in a state court there. They will have to serve you in Canada, but once they do, service will have been effective according to their state rules of procedure and what is sometimes referred to as a "long-arm" statute. You will have to defend the proceeding, otherwise, they will obtain a default judgment. Once they have a judgment in a state court, they could then engage the services of an Ontario lawyer to have the judgment recognized in Ontario. If that happens, they will be able to enforce against you here in Ontario.
Having said that, if the amount of the services provided is not great, it may not be economically feasible for them to do all of that and as such, all they might do is bother you for a while to try to pressure you into paying.
