It's hard to predict what a Court would say especially without seeing the document and how it's worded.
I would argue that the employer breached or rescinded the contract and you agreed. But the clause that was in the contract died with the contract. You did not sign a separate non-comp agreement.
Also, non-competition agreements, even if there was a valid one, are only enforceable when they are reasonable.
For this reason I would suggest that you sit down with a lawyer, face to face, and have the lawyer review the agreement and your facts and give an opinion to be sure.
