No. I cannot see any reason this would be a problem for the estate. As a U.S. attorney in CA I have had trustees from Canada named without any problems on U.S. trusts.
If the attorney cannot give you any specific reason, I would push very hard to have you appointed. And, if that attorney refuses, you can always move to a new attorney.

Unfortunately your brother is entirely correct. It's extremely difficult for you to function properly as an executor.
It's almost a necessity that an executor be a resident. If not you will have to put down a bond as security. The practicalities become extremely difficult to say the least.
Your brother isn't trying to lead you astray. Lawyers always very strongly warn their clients not to choose non-residents for their executors.
