Hi. I am wondering if you could please help us. I am Canadian and my fiancee is Chinese. We really want to get married in Canada next summer; however, we understand that obtaining a visitor visa to Canada is incredibly difficult. However, we still really want to try. We are wondering if it will strengthen our case to get married in China first (by signing the papers but no official ceremony) and then applying for the visa? Or should we wait and just remain engaged, as our purpose is to get married here anyways. Also, should we apply for the tourist visa or visiting family and friends? If we are not married yet, can he still apply for the family and friends visa? Thanks so much!

Jackie,

Because of the efforts to apply for a visitors visa, I suggest you apply for a conjugal partner visa.

In effect you are sponsoring him as an immigration sponsor for the purposes of getting married. Although technically there is no Fiance visa, a fiance is considered a conjugal partner.

If you do apply for a tourist visa, you can get married in Canada and then apply for a perm resident visa while in Canada and married.

I think the conjugal partner may be the way to go.
