Understanding Canadian laws and rights
The Canadian legal system is complex, due to the need to accommodate two languages and address both common and civil legal traditions. In general, Canadian law is based on the British common law system, but within the province of Quebec, civil disputes are handled with a civil law system that is more proscriptive and permits less flexibility to individual judges to make decisions based on the unique details of each case. This means that Canada is a bijural country, with two different types of law. In criminal disputes, common law is used throughout the country.
