Hi I'm doing linear...

Hi I'm doing linear regression across a lot of independent variables. When I pull single linear regressions of the variables, they are not highly correlated to the dependent variable (r<0.2). However, when I run a multivariate regression of all of the independent variables, the correlation jumps to be low/moderately correlated (0.4<r<0.7). Is there an explanation behind this?
