Customer Question
I've got a Cadillac...

I've got a Cadillac 2008 CTS with all upggrades (I own it from new) and just had my fourth wheel bearing failure - only a 100,000 miles I think the first one at 60,000 miles - that seems too high - please let me know the cause so I can prevent this in the future (by the way I had a 100,000 GM warranty / 7 years - the 7 years over before I hit the first bearing failure.

Mechanic's Assistant: Besides this, what condition is the car in?

Excellent condition - mean to keep it another 5 to 7 years

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your CTS yourself? What have you tried so far?

No - always serviced by a GM dealer every 3 to 5K miles, always aligned the wheels

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

It is expensive - I will now have paid $2,400 for the 4 bearings - 2.4c a mile.

Mechanic's Assistant: When we are ready I'll take you to the appropriate web page.

Good afternoon,

That does seem a little too frequent for wheel bearing failures. Do you live in a part of the country where you drive through a lot of rain or snow?

Do you wash the car really frequently?

I live in Ohio and wash car regularly
Cadillac Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

The only thing that makes wheel bearings fail is contamination from water, ice, dirt, etc. If you are experiencing frequent failures the only explanation would be either bad parts or they are constantly being exposed to contaminants.

At this point all of the wheel bearings have failed and been replaced, but only once each right?

each one once.
Cadillac Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

That's really not terrible. I live in the desert and we usually see the wheel bearings fail at about 100-150k or so.

Wow - at $600 a pop that is expensive. I’ve had many cars over 200k miles and wheel bearings were not a problem. To date I’ve spent 2.4c a mile only on wheel bearings. I the future ( I will be retired soon) I will replace these myself as I see that the part is not so expensive - the bearings have some sort of sensor in them that assist in the ABS and ESP functionality that affects three systems per my message center (AWD, stabilitrack and ABS).
Cadillac Mechanic: Jared D, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 months ago

$600 each is pretty pricey. This car has a hub/bearing assembly, so it makes the part a little more expensive, but the labor should be cheap.
