Customer Question
I have a 2004...

I have a 2004 cadillac srx/6cylinder and I was told the internal chain in the transfer case is failing. Do I need a new transfer case or could I replace only the internal chain that is failing?

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '04 Cadillac?

SRX

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your SRX yourself? What have you tried so far?

I've had a mechanic replace the outer tie rods and the differential as well the left front lower motor mount

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? Is it an automatic or a manual transmission?

150k

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

It appears to be a common problem with this make. Any chance there would be a recall?

Ok, I have been a tech for 36 years and yes, I worked for Caddy at one time and yes, transfer case chains can fail, or get slack and or the sprocket gears get worn. Not real common but can and does happen to some, Unsure why.To be honest? yes the chain can be replaced but, it s a lot of work, basically a full rebuild, requires several special tools and more. IMO?at this stage> get a used one or rebuilt and not pay to do the chain,Its going to cost more $ doing so and becomes a little risky depending on the shop and their warranty etc. Buying rebuild, new etc eliminates that risk as they do come with a firm warranty. I am not there. I can not say it is the chain, Sounds like it but.. I can only supply information as if in fact it is the chain and one would really need to open the case to inspect and confirm., No real external tests other then play in it which sounds like was done. I have attached 2 files. One how to remove it and one how to put it back for your reference and you see what I mean . I am not in parts but on my end a new one shows this information : 19132968 $1,656.72. Its your cal but I still say reman or new or even used is an option, Hope all goes ok, Here are the files

Please rate my service I have provided today, Many thanks, Randall
