I have an '03...

I have an '03 Cadillac Deville DTS. The nav panel remains on all the time, tilted, with the following message: Caution Cannot Load System Software. Disk Type Incorrect. Please Insert Correct System Disk.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your DeVille yourself? What have you tried so far?

We're attempting to fix it; the only thing we have is the maps disc, and I gather that the message usually appears when something happens to the main operating system - does that sound about right? We're just getting started with the diagnostics

Mechanic's Assistant: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged?

Yes and yes

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Someone had tried jumping the old battery; the battery has now been replaced with new.

It does sound like it's having a hard time reading the disk, likely due to a failed disk drive. What this means is unit replacement, of course, there are no serviceable parts on that unit. I would consult with www.car-part.com and locate a used unit and replace with that. It will require programming with a dealer-quality scan tool to make it work, but putting a used unit in will save you hundreds of dollars over buying a reman from the dealer.

I guess this doesn't exactly answer my question. I've done some digging online to try to find answers as well; for some people, it sounds like this happened after the battery was jumped, and that was something that the previous owner had done when the car didn't start. The faceplate is tipped out, and the readout states "Caution Cannot Load System Software. Disk Type Incorrect. Please Insert Correct System Disk." I was hoping, based on some of what I read, that there may be an available disc to reinstall the operating system on the unit. Is this the case? Did an improper vehicle jump likely cause this issue? If so, what is the *correct* way to do this?

If it was jump started with reverse polarity, you'd likely have more problems than this. However, just the power surge from jump starting can affect these electronics in odd ways.

There isn't a disc to restore the OS, any sort of firmware is uploaded via programming equipment at your GM dealer, not via disc. It's not likely that the OS is damaged, that would be unusual. What you're describing is a disk drive failure, it can't read the disc, probably because the optic is damaged or malfunctioning.

One thing you can try is a hard reset, which is as follows: disconnect both battery cables under the rear seat, then touch the cable ends together for about ten seconds. This erases all volatile memory, and solves a lot of logic lockup problems on these cars. After ten seconds or so, reconnect the battery cables and try it again to see if it corrects itself.
