Having the "dead Cadillac"...

Having the "dead Cadillac" problem with my 99 Deville. Have had the "may not restart" report for months, with no actual effect. Weird part is that the symptoms are variable, but began with total dead. No dash lights, can sometimes get accessories, radio, interior lights, trunk release, but other times not. Battery is fine, showing 12.7v, resistance on both sets of ignition keys are 5.7 ohms. Charged all night, went right back to the dead Cadillac. Battery disconnected now, giving it some time.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? The dashboard bulbs?

I haven't checked the fuses behind the seat yet, but we're talking total dead, then variable depending on the key position. Interior lights seem weak, and take a minute to illuminate, trunk release clicks, but doesn't release. Sometimes door locks via the remote work, sometimes not. Chassis ground seems good.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your DeVille yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes. Just testing at this point. Checked engine compartment fuses, battery, and just generally fiddled around trying different scenarios for awhile.

The symptoms are different under various conditions. After disconnecting the battery for several hours, the interior lights worked, and the trunk release was functional. Now none of that is valid, but I get the following results with the ignition switch in various positions: IGN SWITCHAccessory position Radio works. Door open dinger works.
Radio turns off if I try to turn headlamps on. Comes back on when I
turn headlamp switch off. Radio loses channel, but retains
channel memory. Defaults to a different channel, but recalls
proper channel with programmable button. Twilight switch
has no effect on radio.
No dash lights
No interior lightsOff position Dinger works, but goes off if I try headlamp switch.On position Dinger works
Gear selector display (only) illuminates, goes off if I turn on
headlamps or press the brake pedal. Comes back on after going
through startup sequence (antenna, fuel pump or ride leveling, not
sure which).Run position Nothing. Everything dead.Start position Nothing. Have to go back to “off” to get dinger, or the gear selection
lights (when backing through the key positions).Key resistor (both sets) read 5.9k ohms.This is beginning to look to me like it's not VAT related at all, as I can't find my exact symptoms online, anywhere. Some of them, but always somewhat different.

Battery reads good at 12.6v. After leaving battery disconnected for several hours, reconnecting and inserting key to on position, heard a click from what seemed like the battery area.

Static voltage on the battery is 12.6v, and that's obviously good static voltage. What we really need to know, however, is what the voltage is doing when the battery is loaded. This requires a battery testing tool.

The reason I'm telling you this is because you are describing a low battery voltage condition, it's what makes the most sense right now. Lacking this load test voltage, I'd say that you probably have a battery that needs replacing.

Short of that, I'd be testing voltage drops from battery positive and battery negative to their terminations at the fuse block, engine ground, starter, etc. This can be done with a multimeter, I can walk you through that if you'd like.
