Most likely it sounds as though the brake shift lock mechanism or solenoid isn't releasing the shifter. Do you have a voltmeter or at least a 12 volt test light in order to do a few tests?

You can start though by checking these 2 fuses, the fuses "LT TRN/SIG" and the "SHFTR SOL" both in the rear fuse block located under the left rear seat.
