I cannot comment on your specific case, but generally, if the employee is unable to work for a period of time, due to physical and/or mental condition, then, in fact such employee can apply for short term disability and in some cases it might be sufficient if employee's physician certifies the medical / mental condition for short term disability and in some cases an employee that has applied for short term disability could be required to undergo an evaluation by physician chosen by the short term disability company.
